The Bible clearly emphasizes that there is only one true God, the Most High God, and warns against following or worshiping other gods (Deuteronomy 6:14). While people may recognize other “gods” in culture or folklore, scripture consistently calls believers to worship and follow the one true God through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.
Jesus Christ and the Most High God
Jesus repeatedly identifies Himself in unity with God the Father. In John 14:6–11, He declares:
- He is the way, the truth, and the life, and no one comes to the Father except through Him.
- He speaks and acts in full harmony with the Father, showing that His words and works represent God’s will.
- He sends the Comforter (Holy Ghost) to dwell within believers, uniting them with God.
Through this relationship, believers can be “one with Him” (John 14:20), connecting to the Father through Jesus Christ.
Warnings Against Other Gods
Deuteronomy 6:14 warns against following “other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you.” The Bible emphasizes that worship should be reserved for God alone, the Creator, Sustainer, and Most High God.
The Title “Most High God” in Scripture
- Genesis 14:18–22: Melchizedek, king of Salem, is called priest of the Most High God, highlighting God’s supremacy.
- Hebrews 7:1: Melchizedek blesses Abraham as priest of the Most High God.
- Acts 16:17: God is called the Most High God, the source of salvation.
Humans as “Gods” in Scripture
Psalm 82:6 states, “Ye are gods, and all of you are children of the Most High.” Jesus references this in John 10:34–36, showing that all humans, as children of God, share in His divine potential. However, this does not imply equality with God the Father but highlights our relationship to Him through divine sonship and the Word.
Jesus’ Authority and the Response of Others
In John 10:29–38, the Jews accused Jesus of blasphemy because He claimed unity with God. Jesus clarified that His works demonstrate the Father’s authority, reinforcing the principle that true divinity and authority come only through God.
Practical Application
- Worship only the Most High God through Jesus Christ.
- Recognize Jesus Christ as mediator and advocate with the Father.
- Rely on the guidance and promptings of the Holy Ghost to remain in alignment with God.
- Acknowledge the divine potential in humanity while submitting to God’s ultimate authority.
The Bible’s teaching is clear: while other “gods” may exist in name or culture, true worship, obedience, and relationship belong only to the Most High God through Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost.
